A couple in George County, Miss., caused police to respond to a domestic disturbance call around 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 9. Police allowed the woman to depart the scene with a family member, leaving her own vehicle there. Near midnight, possibly believing the man to be asleep, she asked two male friends to drive her to the residence to retrieve her vehicle.
As she attempted to do so, however, the man who’d earlier been involved in the domestic-disturbance call approached the car with her two friends in it. He was wearing brass knuckles and struck one of the men in the face repeatedly; that man drew a firearm and shot the assailant twice, killing him. Police transported the man suffering from facial injuries to the hospital and said from the initial investigation that they were treating the incident as a self-defense shooting. After discovering his Henderson, Tenn., store's alarm system had been disabled, owner Edward Plunk decided to stay at the business overnight. When an intruder carrying a shiny object in his hands broke in during the early morning hours and advanced towards the businessman, Plunk opened fire, killing the burglar. Authorities ruled the shooting justifiable and revealed the suspect was believed to have been the ringleader of the largest burglary ring in southwestern Tennessee.
