Q: I have a Marlin Model 782 repeater, Serial No. 27392733, with a Micro-Groove barrel. I would like to understand how to narrow down its time of manufacture.

A: That model of Marlin was produced between 1971 and 1988. To determine the exact year your rifle was made, subtract the first two digits of the serial number from 100. So, 100 minus 27 equals 73, which indicates that your rifle was built in 1973.
