Smith & Wesson’s first polymer-frame, semi-automatic pistol, the Sigma, was refined into the company’s SD line. As S&W introduced and evolved its popular and award-winning M&P series of handguns, the SD9 stayed on as a no-frills option for those looking for a reliable handgun backed by the S&W brand, and the design won its own following of loyal fans. New for 2024, Smith & Wesson is offering an update of the popular pistol as the SD9 2.0.

The SD9 is a 9 mm Luger, striker-fired handgun of a “compact” size that approximates the dimensions of a Glock 19. It has a 4” barrel, its overall length is 7.2”, and it weighs 22.7 ozs. Its polymer frame has a Picatinny accessory rail on its dustcover. Sights use a white three-dot system and fit into dovetails in the slide.

The “Gen II” SD9 uses a metal 16-round box magazine that is compatible with both Sigma and original SD magazines. The pistol will be available in both full and limited-capacity magazine versions. Its is also compatible with holsters and other accessories designed for the original SD handguns.

Upgrades to the SD include more aggressive front and rear serrations in the slide and top serrations between the sights to reduce glare. The SD’s “Self-Defense Trigger” has been enhanced to a flat-faced design, which Smith & Wesson says “provides better tactile feedback during the pull, break and reset, allowing for more controlled and accurate shots.”

The SD9 2.0 will initially be offered in a two-tone finish with a satin slide finish and black polymer frame, but expect more frame and slide finish options to be offered as they were with the original SD. The Smith & Wesson SD9 2.0 has a MSRP of $349 or about $60 less than the original SD9. For more information, visit smith-wesson.com.
