PROOF Research has introduced PROOF eXponential Twist (PXT)—an advancement in rifling that improves durability, accuracy and shootability—to the commercial market. PXT is engineered to meet the demands of modern high-pressure ammunition. Extensive military testing and research have demonstrated its ability to deliver longer barrel life, as well as enhanced consistency and performance.

“PXT is a complete redesign of how the bullet engages the rifling during initial rotation,” explained Brandon Hulzebosch, PROOF Research director of sales and marketing. “As the industry advances and ammunition continues to evolve toward higher pressures and performance, we set out to address the technological gap between current barrel systems and where ammunition is headed. PXT gives shooters smoother, more controlled engagement that translates into greater consistency and improved performance. We are excited to be at the forefront of modern technology that will redefine barrel performance across the industry.”

Traditional barrels rely on sharp-edged rifling and constant twist rates. Engagement forces the bullet into abrupt rifling. While this conventional approach has long defined rifle barrel design, the excessive stress can create pressure spikes, accelerated barrel wear and bullet deformation. The issues increase with modern high-pressure cartridges, faster velocities and repetitive firing.

PXT addresses the challenges through an exponential twist rifling profile that progressively brings the bullet into rotation rather than abruptly forcing it into rotation. Combined with PROOF Research’s proprietary, smoother-edged profile, PXT reduces the twist angle by as much as 95 to 98 percent. It also lowers bullet engraving force by approximately 30 percent, creating a more controlled and gradual twist progression.

The result is a barrel system capable of delivering measurable improvements in consistency and accuracy. PXT barrels provide a 30 to 100 percent increase in barrel life by spreading degradation over much more of the bore (depending on barrel length and application). The design supports much higher pressures and velocities without shortening barrel life and delivers 20 to 50 percent improvements in consistency and accuracy across multiple ammunition types and lot variations.

PXT constitutes a modern approach to a concept that has been around for some time: gain-twist rifling. In the mid-19th century, manufacturers employed a gradual twist to avoid having soft-lead projectiles deform upon firing when introduced into the lands and grooves of twist rifling. PXT not only approaches this from the standpoint of barrel longevity, it also reduces harsh rotational forces that can damage thinly jacketed bullets, too.

PROOF Research has barrel blanks available, including AR barrels and select pre-fit offerings. More options are coming soon. PXT barrels are also found in the company’s Elevation FDX and Elevation MTR (Mountain Tactical Rifle) FDX rifle platforms in .22 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 7 mm PRC, 7mm Backcountry and .300 PRC chamberings.
