Field Tested: Air Armor Tech Inflatable Gun Cases

If you've invested in a top-notch rifle, like the McRees Precision BR-10 shown here, you'll want to make sure it's properly protected when transported. Typical foam-filled soft cases are inexpensive but don't offer all that much padding. While hard cases provide more protection, they are bulky and take up a lot of storage space.

Air Armor Tech's inflatable gun cases are a high-tech solution that provide plenty of padding while being lightweight and easy to store. Developed by Blaine “Rock” Tompkins, a retired fighter pilot, the inflatable LGC (Long Gun Case) features an outer shell of 1000D Cordura ballistic nylon treated with a water-resistant UV coating.

The three-pipe inflation system allows both of the 3-inch-thick (when fully inflated) air bladders to be quickly inflated orally, with an electric compressor or a bike tire pump. A twist open release valve allows the 8-lb. case to be rolled up to the size of a small sleeping bag in moments.

The interior of the case is fitted out with tie-down straps to secure the long gun, a pistol pocket and a barrel sleeve. Other features include integrated backpack straps, water-resistant YKK zippers and floatation support for up to 200 lbs. of gear.

The same technology has been integrated into the company's inflatable scope protectors which actually operate more like minimalist gun cases. Once inflated and strapped in place, the 16-oz. covers protect optics from zero spoiling impact, scratches and dirt while trekking through the wilderness. It will float up to 21 lbs. of equipment and can be used as a makeshift "sandbag" rifle rest.

An integrated padded handle provides a convenient means to carry the rifle when not using a sling. When the rifle is ready to fire, the case flaps that cover the lenses can be lifted so the scope can be used without removing the cover. The other option is to remove and deflate the cover which can then be comfortably tucked into a backpack or large pocket until needed.
