In South Carolina, a woman who was assaulted by her husband in front of their child shot the man in the leg to protect herself and the child. Police had a hard time sorting out the details because the husband and wife gave conflicting accounts of the dispute, but at some point the man allegedly had his hands around the woman’s neck in front of their 12-year-old daughter. The husband was charged in connection with domestic violence and unlawful conduct toward a child; the woman was not charged because she had acted in self-defense, police said. A Terre Haute, Ind., woman returned home from dropping her children off at day care to find a strange bicycle in her driveway. Retrieving a gun from inside the home, she went to investigate, eventually finding a 31-year-old robber inside her garage. At about this time her husband also returned home, and together they held the intruder at gunpoint until the police could arrive. According to the authorities, the robber was found to have a screwdriver concealed up his sleeve, which they believe could have been used as a weapon. (Tribune-Star, Terre Haute, IN, 7/2/16)

A Tucson, Ariz., department store owner, Nick Parise, was sleeping in his store until he was awakened by the sound of a prowler. He picked up a gun and went to investigate, finding a man as he looted a gun case. Gun in hand, he marched the would-be burglar to the front of the store and held him there until he could attract the attention of a policeman. (Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, AZ)
