One robbery wasn’t enough for a New Mexico criminal, but the second one led to his undoing. The armed criminal had allegedly robbed a pizza restaurant and was fleeing when he came across a delivery driver in the parking lot. Thinking he could get some additional cash, he told the driver to hand over his money, too. But the driver was armed and shot the suspect. Albuquerque Police spokesman Tanner Trixier said the driver acted in self-defense, and no charges will be brought against him. The gunman was treated at a hospital and has been charged. The Armed Citizen® Extra
A homeowner in Bridgeton, N.J., will not face charges for the defensive use of his firearm during a home invasion that led to the death of the burglar. The county prosecutor announced that the suspect was “clearly attempting to gain unlawful forced entry” into the residence when he was shot once in the chest, and witness statements and other evidence corroborated the victim’s story. (New Jersey Herald, Newton, NJ, 9/23/15)

March 1967

A prisoner who escaped from the Federal Reformatory at Chillicothe, Ohio, while serving a stolen car sentence, was recaptured without firing a shot because of the assistance of a local farmer. Wendell Bryant got his shotgun out and backed up Deputy Sheriff Dwight Beery when the prisoner was relocated. Deputy Earl Kuhn reported that the prisoner appeared ready to make a break for it at one point, but did not do so “because of Mr. Bryant standing in an advantageous position.” The Ross County Law Enforcement Officers Association later honored Bryant for his help at a special meeting.
