In 2024, HK USA released its long-awaited micro-compact handgun, the CC9, which proved to be a reliable and durable addition to the concealed-carry marketplace. More recently, the company introduced yet another carry-oriented design, the VP9CC, which builds off the company’s popular VP9 line of duty-size handguns. Watch our latest “Gun of the Week” video above to see the details.
“One of the things that people love about the VP9 is, on the duty-style models, the grip itself is incredibly customizable. It has different interchangeable panels, backstraps, and they've continued that over onto the VP9CC,” American Rifleman Executive Editor Evan Brune said. “So this gun comes with six interchangeable backstraps, so you can absolutely tailor this to your hand size and get a perfect fit.”

The backstraps also allow end users to adjust trigger reach, too, ensuring that they’re able to engage the trigger at the optimum position to maintain adequate trigger control for quick follow-up shots. HK, like most other makers, allows for the mounting of red-dot optics on its VP9CC, but the company’s optics-mounting solution differs from many other designs on the market.
“What HK has done is they've actually created this, this plate here, that sits so low that it has this U-shaped cutout that actually sits around the striker channel in the slide,” Brune said. “So that means that this optic is sitting 40 percent lower than most other mounted optics in the marketplace, which is incredible.”

HK’s Germanic lineage is also readily apparent in several design elements, most notably in the magazine-release mechanism.
“You'll notice this does not have your standard American push-button release. This has the bilateral little paddles that we're used to seeing on HK’s European guns,” Brune said. “And, you know, a lot of people, you know, everyone's got personal preferences. This is certainly something different than what we're used to seeing. I actually kind of like the paddle-style release, because you can just take your middle finger there and drop that magazine.”
