Once relegated to hunting and competition circles, over the past two decades, semi-automatic shotguns have evolved into serious self-defense and fighting arms. Gone are the days of expensive custom guns that were still picky about the shells they would feed. Modern semi-automatic shotguns are both reliable and affordable. At the lead of this pack is the Mossberg 940. Introduced in 2020 with the JM Pro competition version, the design was quickly adapted to hunting and self-defense applications. New for 2025, Mossberg is expanding the 940 Pro family with the Tactical SPX and Tactical Professional models.

Mossberg’s 940 Pro semi-automatic shotguns have been adapted into “tactical” models for civilian and law enforcement users.

The 940 Pro family of shotguns are gas-operated and have corrosion-resistant internal parts, including a nickel boron-coated gas piston, magazine tube, hammer and sear. The Tactical SPX and Tactical Professional have several upgrades over the original Tactical model. Equipped with a “ghost ring” rear aperture and front post with fiber-optic insert sights (both mounted inside low-profile protective “wings”), the shotguns are also optics ready, with receivers drilled and tapped as well as cut for direct mounting of micro red-dots with an RMSc footprint (other footprints can be mounted through the use of included adapter plates).

Mossberg 940 Pro shotguns are optics ready with a direct-mount receiver. New enhancements include a re-designed fore-end.

For safety and ease of manipulation, the shotguns have an oversized ergonomic bolt release, a knurled and extended charging handle, and an enlarged and beveled loading port with a bright orange anodized magazine follower. Barrels are 18.5” and are threaded for Mossberg’s AccuChoke (cylinder bore tube included). Chambered for 3” shells, the shotguns have an extended magazine capacity of seven 2 3/4” rounds (a five-round model also available), with a new one-piece magazine tube, where the magazine assembly stays in place when the barrel is removed. A stabilizing clamp connects the barrel and magazine tube and has both M-Lok slots and sling swivel studs.

Tactical SPX models come with a Vang Comp shotshell carrier that attaches with hook-and-loop fabric.

The new 940 Pro Tactical models also have redesigned furniture. Length-of-pull, as well as cast and comb height, is adjustable on the buttstock with the use of spacers. The new fore-end incorporates a heat shield, as well as M-Lok slots in the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. Both pieces of furniture have QD swivel cups and Mossberg’s signature texturing in the contact areas.
