In 2020, Springfield Armory introduced its first centerfire bolt-action rifle design with the aptly named Model 2020 Waypoint. While the initial Waypoint design was intended to be more of a precision platform, Springfield has since come out with several field-ready variants of the Model 2020, including the Boundary. Watch our "Gun of the Week" episode above to see the details of this bolt-action design.

"Springfield Armory has come out with a few different iterations of this design, and the Boundary is really designed, in some ways, to be a little bit more of the traditionally sort of designed rifle," American Rifleman Executive Editor Evan Brune said. "But once we get into this, you'll see that there's very little that's really traditional about this."

While the overall form factor of the Model 2020 Boundary fits the traditional lines of a field-ready hunting rifle, many of the construction elements are cutting-edge. The action features a carbon-fiber-wrapped barrel topped with Springfield's Radial Muzzle Brake, and Springfield includes many of the most modern chamberings in the Waypoint line, such as the 7 mm PRC-chambered example shown above.

"Lock time. That was one of the critical elements of this," Brune said. "Springfield has designed this action to have one of the quickest lock times out there. So you're going to get that instantaneous ignition so you don't get any of those weird pre-ignition vibrations going on."

As configured above, the Springfield Armory Model 2020 Boundary is outfitted with a 24-inch barrel and, unloaded, weighs just 7 pounds. There's a three-round internal box magazine accessible by a hinged magazine floorplate, and a TriggerTech trigger allows for a user-adjustable pull weight measuring between 2.5 and 5 pounds. Springfield offers a .75-MOA accuracy guarantee across its entire Boundary line of rifles.

"So this is an AG Composites carbon-fiber stock. It's hand-painted and it's one of the best-looking stocks out there," Brune said. "It's just really great. And then, of course, you've got your Decelerator recoil pad at the rear here."
