Two robbery suspects thought a pawn shop run by a 74-year-old woman would be an easy target, but Shirley Cornett proved them wrong. Two men walked into a Springdale, Ark., store in early December, pulled out handguns and started stealing property. As one of the troublemakers jumped the counter toward her husband, Cornett pulled out a .38 Spl. revolver and shot the man in the arms. He fired back, and the bullet ricocheted off a pile of books and hit Cornett, but didn’t break her skin. The suspects fled to a hospital in Fort Smith, about 65 miles away, where police found the wounded man and later nabbed his alleged partner in crime after a foot chase neat the parking lot. Charges are pending against the men. Police reviewed surveillance video and said Cornett acted in self-defense. (5newsonline.com, Fort Smith, AR, 12/7/14)

A Pleasant Grove, Utah, man was forced to kill a 24-year-old intruder inside his home Sunday morning. The homeowner and his wife were awakened in the early morning hours by pounding on their front door. Retrieving a handgun, the male resident cracked the door to see what the stranger wanted, at which point the man forced his way into the residence. The homeowner fired once, striking the interloper in the chest. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where we later died. Police say the deceased had moved into the neighborhood recently, and was intoxicated at the time of the break-in. (Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake City, UT, 5/4/15)

Two men, accused of being members of a nation-wide gang which had been looting public telephone coin boxes, were captured by a tavern owner near Bear, Del. John A. Sarapulski noticed the pair tampering with the telephone outside his tavern , called state police and held the men at gunpoint until the police arrived. Telephone company investigators said the prisoners were members of a syndicate under surveillance for more than a year in several parts of the country. Sarapulski had been alerted to the syndicate’s activities by the investigators after the booth outside his tavern was robbed a short time earlier. (Wilmington Morning News, Wilmington, DE)
