An Uber driver with a right-to-carry permit broke up a ruckus in Chicago. The driver shot and injured a man who had been firing a handgun into a group of people near Logan Square. The only injury was that of the initial shooter, who was treated, charged and denied bail. The driver, said to be acting self-defense and the defense of others, won’t be charged. An 85-year-old El Cerrito, Calif., man successfully defended himself against two men he caught burglarizing his house, Wednesday morning. Upon hearing the suspects break into his home through the back door, the resident armed himself and went to investigate—eventually encountering the thugs face to face. The elderly man shot at the two culprits, striking one of them, which caused both men to flee the scene. The wounded man was apprehended a short time later after, upon being located by the authorities, he attempted to run from the arresting officers. The second suspect is still unaccounted for, and the police continue to pursue him. (Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, CA, 9/4/15)

April 1983
An intruder bashed through the door of David Gerken’s home near Elwood, Neb., struck Gerken with a sawed-off shotgun, then bound him and his wife. The gunman threatened to kill the couple if they moved while he left the house, but Gerken, 74, slipped his bonds, readied a shotgun and warned the man against re-entry. When answered by a shotgun blast, Gerken returned fire, and the intruder fell back through the doorway. The gunman managed to drive away, but collapsed shortly thereafter in a nearby restaurant.
