One problem with random attacks is that you never know how your victim might respond. An assault suspect in Washington state learned that lesson the hard way. The assailant had been shopping at a Wal-Mart in Yakima. He picked a metal tee-ball bat off the shelf and struck another shopper. The victim, who had a concealed carry permit, pulled a SIG Sauer from his holster and ordered the attacker to lay on the ground. Store surveillance indicated the attack was unprovoked. The suspect was being held in the Yakima County jail. (Yakima Herald Republic, Yakima, WA, 4/14/15)

An Akron, Ohio, man used his gun to thwart a home invasion. According to the police, two armed men entered a home in southeast Akron and encountered the homeowner, who shot at and hit at least one of the suspects. Both burglars fled the scene on foot, but one of the culprits, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, collapsed and died not far from the scene. The authorities are still looking for the other thief. No injuries to the homeowner were reported. (newsnet5.com, Cleveland, OH, 8/9/15)

March 1965

J.L. Campbell, operator of Silver Falls Lodge near Silverton, Ore., was awakened by his wife who had heard noises in the main part of the lodge. Campbell, armed with a .22 revolver, surprised two burglars. He held them at gunpoint and had his wife call Harry Luckett, superintendent of Silver Falls Park. At this time, Campbell was aware that confederates of the two he had captured were outside somewhere. Shortly after Luckett arrived, one of the two burglars jumped him in an attempted escape. Campbell wounded one and recaptured both. Police took the burglars into custody and later picked up three persons who had waited outside the lodge during the events inside.
