Shortly after 9 p.m., a gas station clerk exchanged gunfire with three masked, armed robbers using the firearm he legally carried, thus protecting a co-worker from harm. The clerk sustained injuries to the hip and leg that were determined to be non-life-threatening. Two of the 20-year-old suspects were taken to the hospital and later died. The third suspect is reportedly still being sought by police, who are investigating other convenience store robberies in the area. (The Repository, Canton, OH, 9/14/14)

The owner of a grocery store just outside of Tyler, Texas, exchanged gunfire with and killed a 24-year-old man who was attempting to rob his business Sunday afternoon. Armed with a handgun, and wearing gloves and a ski mask, the robber entered the store and demanded money, prompting the owner to produce his own firearm. It is unknown whether the store owner suffered any injuries in the ensuing gunfight, but the culprit was dead at the scene by the time Smith County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived. Investigators believe a second suspect, who fled the scene in a green car prior to their arrival, was also involved in the crime. The business owner does not face any charges for the defensive use of his firearm at this time. (The Palestine Herald, Palestine, TX, 1/27/15)

December 1979
When three masked men, two of them armed, burst into an Irvington, N.J., bank, security guard Johnnie C. Mason reached for his revolver and ducked out of sight. After two of the robbers ran behind the counter, Mason ordered the third, who was standing guard by the door, to surrender. The robber whirled to fire, but Mason shot first and killed him. Mason then turned toward the counter and fired again, mortally wounding the other gunman. The unarmed robber thereupon surrendered. (The Star Ledger, Newark, NJ)
