thief got more than he bargained for after stealing a sport utility vehicle in Missoula, Mont. Just after 8 a.m., local deputies were called to investigate the theft, and in their search for the offender, the officers spotted the SUV and attempted to pull it over and apprehend the illicit driver. However, he fled through several neighborhoods and a construction site before crashing into a mailbox. Witnessing the pursuit and crash outside his window, a nearby resident armed himself in case he was drawn into the confrontation. And sure enough, the carjacker chose to force his way into that very house, where he was met by the vigilant homeowner and held there until the police arrived to arrest him on multiple charges. An attempted burglary on Carefree Lane turned out to be anything but. After the robber began his attempt to rob the residence, he was confronted by the homeowner, who discharged his own firearm wounding the man fatally. No charges have yet been filed, though the police investigation of the incident is still ongoing. (WDBJ7Roanoke Co., Va., 02/27/19)

Brandishing a cal. .22 pistol, a thief entered James E. Ralph's Little Rock, Ark., package store and said "Give me your money and put your hands up," to the clerk on duty. As the clerk handed over the money from the cash register, Ralph fired a .30-30 rifle from the rear of the store, killing the holdup man. (Arkansas Gazette)
