Home security systems do a good job of alerting you to intruders, but they do little to protect you. So an Albuquerque, N.M., homeowner protected himself and his girlfriend, using a gun to stop a man who broke into the home through the garage. (Albuquerque Journal, Albuquerque, N.M., 10/5/18)

A Sacramento business owner fatally shot an armed and masked intruder when he attempted to burglarize the man's office, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. Paramedics pronounced the would-be thief dead at the scene, with several gunshot wounds to his torso. (KCRA, Sacramento, Calif., 11/08/2018)

A 19-year-old Los Osos, Calif. woman allowed a man in her hoe after he asked to use the phone. Once inside, however, he attempted to rape her. Breaking free from her assailant, she ran to her bedroom and picked up a shotgun. The would-be-rapist fled the house. (The Telegram-Tribune, San Luis Obispo County, Calif.)
