A man in Oneida, Tenn., thwarted a burglary attempt on his elderly mother's home. After receiving a phone call from his mother's caregiver, who had heard suspicious noises coming from elsewhere in the house, the man drove over to investigate. He found a woman in the basement with a pocket knife, and proceeded to hold her there at gunpoint until police arrived. (Independent Herald Oneida, Oneida, Tenn., 7/23/19)

Eva McMillan of Dallas, Tex., grabbed a .32 automatic when she saw a prowler in her yard. Pistol in hand, she went outside to investigate and the prowler lunged at her. Miss McMillan fired and he started to run. She fired twice more, ran inside and called the police who found the wounded prowler cowering on a nearby porch. (May 29, AP)
