Bexar County officials were investigating a shooting in which an armed citizen stopped a woman from being attacked. An ex-boyfriend allegedly forced his way into the residence and began assaulting the woman. A third person—it was not reported whether he was in the house or came in from outside—responded by shooting the alleged assailant, who was taken to a hospital. Armed with handguns, two men broke into a house where they were confronted by the homeowner. According to police, “there was an exchange of gunfire, and both suspects fled the scene.” One of the suspects, suffering from gunshot wounds, was found nearby by police. He was transported to a hospital, where he later passed. The other was taken into custody and charged with felony murder. (Montgomery Advertiser, Montgomery, AL, 7/15/17)

Karen Sargeant had warned the intruder who broke into her Seminole, Fla., home several times to stay back. But when he kept advancing on her, she fired her .32 once, killing him. “She gave him every chance and was in fear of her life,” a police official said. “As far as we’re concerned, it was a justified shooting.” (The Times, St. Petersburg, FL)

Standing Guard | Standing on the Line for Freedom

This past August marks 46 years since I raised my right hand and was commissioned as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps. In the summer of 1980, I entered active duty with a firm sense of civic duty and a deep desire to serve our great nation. Like so many who wear the uniform, I was ready to contribute directly to the defense of freedom.
