More than cigarettes can kill you, as one attempted robber found out. A convenience store clerk stepped out of her shop at 3:50 a.m. one morning in St. Louis to take a smoke break. As she was standing behind the building, an armed man approached and attempted to rob her. The worker—who carried for defensive purposes, especially if she worked the overnight shift—pulled a gun and fired three shots, killing the stranger who accosted her. The employee was shot twice in the leg during the confrontation, and she was taken to a hospital, where she was treated. (stltoday.com, St. Louis, MO, 4/25/17)

Early one evening, three robbers entered a Quiznos restaurant, locked the doors behind them and produced two handguns. While one of the robbers was attempting to get money from the register, the other two tried to get into the back room. Meanwhile, one of the employees had barricaded herself behind the door in the back room. She then began to fire her own gun around the edge of the door at the robbers. A round hit one of the criminals while the other two fled. (The Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake City, UT, 6/21/17)
