In a case of a citizen helping out law enforcement, Texas Deputy Dylan Dorris credits a Marine veteran with saving his life. A violent suspect was beating up on Dorris and trying to get the officer’s gun. But the former Marine, who had served two tours in Iraq, pulled his concealed handgun and told the criminal to freeze. The threat was enough to scare off the assailant, who was apprehended soon after by Dorris and another deputy. The suspect was charged for his role in the assault, as well as in the erratic driving and child-endangerment situation that preceded the attack. (Austin American-Statesman, Austin, TX, 1/28/16)

Two Chicago, Ill., teens are dead after the store owner they were attempting to rob fought back. Police believe the two culprits entered Z&S Food and Liquor, announced the robbery and displayed a handgun. This prompted the shopkeeper to draw his own firearm and fire it at each of the suspects. Both thieves would eventually succumb to their injuries. No injuries to the store owner were reported. The same location was also robbed in 2011, and the proprietors defended themselves during that incident as well. (chicago.cbslocal.com , Chicago, IL, 1/10/16)

January 1983

A man stepped up to the checkout counter of a Providence, Ky., pharmacy with a tube of salve. When the clerk rang up the sale, the man pulled a gun and told her to stay quiet. He then ordered pharmacist Jim Scott to come to the counter. When Scott obeyed, the robber fired a shot his way. The bullet missed, but the druggist, having taken up a pistol, returned fire with two rounds which mortally wounded the gunman. (The Sunday Courier and Press, Evansville, IN)
