Quick thinking by a Kwick Shop clerk prevented a robbery. A masked man with a gun entered the convenience store in Wauconda, Ill., and demanded money from the clerk and a customer. The employee, though, retrieved a gun that was in the store for defensive purposes and shot the intruder multiple times. Although authorities took the suspect to a medical center for treatment, the wounds proved to be fatal. The robber was later identified as a parolee who had several robbery and drug convictions in his past. (Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago, IL, 8/25/15)

Deeming it a clear-cut case of self-defense, the local police department doesn’t expect a Meridian, Miss., woman who shot and killed an intruder to be indicted for the shooting. Police responded to the woman’s home Sunday afternoon to find that a male subject had kicked in the front door, entered the living room and been shot by the resident three times in the chest with a .380 ACP-chambered pistol. The suspect then attempted to flee the scene, but collapsed outside and was declared dead at the scene. “This is one of those instances where the homeowner was trying to protect her life and her property,” said Detective Dareall Thompson, of the Meridian Police Department. November 1968
Armed with an empty shotgun, a Pennsylvania housewife drove five escapees from the Northumberland County Prison into the hands of the police. The five had turned up at the Eugene Troxell home in rural Sunbury, Pa., and asked for water. When Troxell complied, two of the men threatened him with knives and demanded his car keys. Ostensibly going for the keys, Mrs. Troxell came back with a shotgun and bluffed the men into releasing her husband. The fugitives were picked up later near the Troxell home.
