The sound of breaking glass in the early hours of the morning woke the resident of a rural home and alerted him to a burglary in progress. The resident armed himself with a pistol and confronted the intruder, who was brandishing a hatchet. After a physical confrontation, the resident fired his pistol. The resident immediately called the police, who arrived to find the suspect in the home, deceased from a single gun-shot wound to the chest. (South Bend Tribune, Hudson Lake, IN, 7/9/13)

A Louisville, Ky. resident was the victim of a home invasion while caring for his mother. According to local authorities, at 10 a.m. three young males kicked in the door of the home. The resident was able to get a firearm and fire at the intruders. One of the intruders was shot at least twice, and received serious injuries that required medical treatment. The police are still looking for the two additional perpetrators. (WDRB.com, Louisville, Ky., 1/10/14)
