Armed Citizen® Today

An off-duty corrections officer in Chicago, Ill., defended himself when three men attempted to carjack him early on the morning of Sept. 3, 2020.

The incident started around 2:30 a.m. as the corrections officer was getting out of his parked vehicle on South Essex Ave. when the three men approached him. One of the men was armed with a handgun, and the three attempted to steal the correction officer's car. In response, the corrections officer drew his own handgun and fired at the one that was armed.

The armed man was wounded in the the groin and arm, while the other two would-be robbers fled. A .38-cal. pistol used in the attempted carjacking was recovered by police at the scene. The injured armed robber was treated for his wounds at a local medical center and released into police custody. He was on parole for a felony theft at the time. Police are still searching for the other two suspects. (c

From the Armed Citizen® Archives November, 1978

While in the water at Bay St. Louis, Miss., beach, Karen Steirwald was assaulted by a man who put a knife to her throat and told her not to move or scream. After she begged him to let her get up and get her towel, the attacker, keeping the knife at her throat, walked her to the beach.

Reaching as if for the towel and pushing the knife away at the same time, Steirwald managed to grab her hidden revolver and point it at the man. He slowly backed off and fled with an accomplice. (The Sea Coast Echo, Bay St. Louis, Miss.)
