Witnesses say a man with a handgun thwarted a carjacking in Clay County. The suspect, 31, tried to enter and steal three occupied vehicles in a commercial area near Terra Haute, Ind. In the first case, the driver locked her passenger door before the man could open it. A second would-be victim had children in her minivan so the suspect closed the door and moved to a third vehicle. After the suspect slipped his hand through a window, the right-to-carry permit holder inside that vehicle produced a handgun, telling the suspect to stop or he would shoot. The carjacker fled to a hotel where he was arrested six minutes later. The county sheriff’s department said the suspect told authorities he was high on methamphetamine and had been desperate for a ride to Indianapolis. (Tribune Star, Terre Haute, IN, 2/10/15)

A clerk at a convenience store in southwest Houston successfully used a firearm to defend his coworker and thwart a robbery, Monday evening. Three armed men entered the store and demanded money. When one of the criminals bashed an employee on the head with his pistol, his 57-year-old colleague produced a gun and managed to wound two of the three suspects. After fleeing the scene of the crime in a tan sedan, the two injured thieves were dropped off at a local hospital, where they both later died. The third suspect remains at large. No charges have been filed against the clerk at this time. (Houston Chronicle, Houston, TX, 7/23/15)

February 1963
As a result of a burglary in his combination grocery/liquor store in Worley, Idaho, Ernest Lagow was sleeping in the rear of the store when he was awakened by the sound of breaking glass. Nothing happened right away, but several hours later Lagow was again awakened—this time by sounds within the store. Taking his rifle, chambered in .30-30 Win., he discovered a man carrying a case of whiskey. He ordered the man to stop, but when the intruder made a move as if to draw a gun, Lagow fired. The thief, who died shortly thereafter, had been convicted of burglarizing the same store several months earlier. (Associated Press)
