Opportunists didn’t wait long to strike after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in August. While most sought shelter, those with a criminal mindset saw the aftermath of the storm as an invitation to loot businesses or burglarize homes. Thus was the case in Corpus Christi, Texas, when a homeowner shot an intruder in the head after the suspect broke into his home shortly after the Category 4 hurricane made landfall. The alleged burglar was taken to a hospital. (Caller Times, Corpus Christi, TX, 8/26/17)

A 23-year-old man attempted to rob a 25-year-old man during broad daylight hours. Unfortunately for the robber, the would-be victim, a licensed concealed-carry holder, shot the assailant in the left groin. The wounded criminal was taken to the hospital and placed under arrest. (The Philadelphia Inquirer, Feltonville, PA, 5/16/17)

Tony Charvat and his family returned from church one Sunday to find a car with its engine running parked in the driveway of their home near Wichita, Kan. Their front door had been forced, so Charvat got a shotgun and made a search. He caught a burglar in one bedroom and held the man for the police. (The Wichita Eagle, Wichita, KS)
