During a 9-1-1 call, a Georgia woman reported she had shot a man who tried to assault her after emerging from his hiding place in a closet. She said she initially tried to fight him off with a spoon, but he was relentless in his attack. She had to shoot to protect herself and her 12-year-old daughter. When police arrived, they found the wounded troublemaker lying outside the home. Investigators say he apparently stumbled out of the house before collapsing on the ground. The miscreant later was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police identified him as a one-time child molester who was listed on the state registry of sex offenders. No charges were filed against the armed citizen. (wtvy.com, Blakely, GA, 2/6/18)

After escaping out of its owner’s apartment, an aggressive dog went on a rampage, attacking a woman pushing a stroller, biting a man with a cane and refusing to release its grip. A number of other nearby people attempted to stop the attack with pepper spray and hitting the out-of-control dog with other objects, to no avail. An armed citizen who witnessed the carnage was finally able to intervene, shooting the dog before it could inflict further injury on others. Police and animal control arrived and took control of the dog. The animal was later euthanized, and no charges were filed against the armed citizen. The dog’s owner faces potential charges. Twelve-year-old Gail Burdine, alone in her parents’ home near Eufala, Okla., watched while a man knocked on the doors, then broke through a glass patio door. She meanwhile loaded and cocked a .410-ga. shotgun. When the intruder stepped through the smashed door, she pointed the gun at him and said, “That’s far enough.” The man turned and ran. She reported his auto tag number and description to police, who arrested a suspect. (Phoenix, Muskogee, OK)
