Two Orange County brothers, Barry and Terah Frost, secured their elderly mother in an interior room of their residence before investigating a suspicious noise in the wee hours of the morning. A 23-year-old armed stranger had entered the home. After Barry found the man in the basement, the intruder attacked, punching him and brandishing a knife. Terah then entered the room and shot and killed the intruder. Police said the crime appeared to be random. (Times-Mail, Bedford, IN, 11/26/14)

A 25-year-old Wisconsin man with a long rap sheet was hospitalized when he was shot while breaking into another man’s home in the early morning hours. The resident, a 33-year-old male, awoke Thursday morning to a stranger pounding on his door. Arming himself with a handgun, he went to investigate, telling the highly intoxicated man to leave. As the resident approached the entry, the interloper kicked the door in and attempted to assault him. The homeowner fired once, striking the burglar in the thigh, then retreated to his room, barricaded the door and contacted the police. When the authorities arrived they found the culprit in the kitchen and transported him to a hospital for treatment. Convicted in the past on drug charges, and currently facing pending sexual assault charges, the felon will likely have a burglary charge added to his record once he is discharged from the hospital. June 1960
After calling the sheriff to report two suspicious men sitting in a car near his Pharisburg, Ohio grocery and gas stop, Stanley Rhoades resumed the business of putting stock in order. Moments later, two masked gunmen entered and Rhoades dropped behind the counter and reached for his .22-caliber pistol. One gunman, crouched near the floor, inched down the aisle towards Rhoades. As he rounded a display case, the grocer shot him in the head. Rhoades then crept after the second gunmen, who fired at him and ran to the door. Rhoades stood up, took careful aim, shot again and wounded the bandit in the shoulder. After tugging frantically at the door with his remaining good arm, the felon turned and surrendered.
