A group of women were enjoying themselves at the Cork! wine bar when a man they did not know pressed his leg against their bistro table, violating their personal space. One woman asked the man to move away. The man became upset, flipped the table over and punched the woman in the face. After the assault, another customer intervened and ordered the man to leave. The assailant grew agitated and pulled a knife as he walked toward the customer. An employee entered in time to see the knife, prompting him to pull out a handgun and order the assailant to the ground. He was held at gunpoint until police arrived. A DeKalb County, Ga., man was ordering at a Sonic restaurant when a group of men approached him and demanded money. The 23-year-old robbery victim was able to produce a handgun and fire it at his assailants, striking one of them and causing the others to flee. The injured robber later died of his wounds. An accomplice was later arrested and now faces a murder charge thanks to a Georgia law that allows a person to be charged with murder if another person is killed as a result of his or her criminal act. Police are still looking for a potential third suspect. The victim is not facing any charges for the defensive use of his handgun.  (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta, GA, 1/21/15)

February 1984:
Nellie Fox, 87, was babysitting her five grandchildren near Inglewood, Calf., when her former son-in-law telephoned and threatened to kill her and her daughter. He had broken into the house earlier in the week and made a similar threat. Alarmed, Fox immediately called police to report the phone threat. But before they arrived, the man broke into the house through the front door, and was killed by a blast from Fox’s 12-ga. shotgun. She was not held in the incident.
