Pierre Phurcien has carried concealed for the past eight years. Recently, the practice came in handy when a would-be thief entered the Lehigh Acres, Fla., grocery store that Phurcien owns. “I saw a guy with a mask, and I was thinking it was a kid playing,” Phurcien told media afterward. Pretty soon, however, he found out that this was no game. “He came right here, and he pulled a gun and said, ‘Give me the money,’” Phurcien said. “Then I pulled my gun, and … he starts to run away.” Lee County deputies were still looking for the suspect. A Grand Junction, Colo., man walked into his garage to smoke a cigarette to discover a stranger with gloves and a flashlight was already there. The resident pulled his firearm and held the 33-year-old suspected burglar to gunpoint until law enforcement officers could arrive. The culprit was arrested at the scene and has been charged with second-degree burglary, trespassing of a dwelling and possession of burglary tools. December 1979
After two break-ins at his Fallentimber, Pa., general store, Robert McKee began sleeping in back. His vigil ended when, armed with a .357 Mag. revolver, he surprised a trio of would-be burglars. When McKee ordered them to lie on the floor two of the criminals obeyed, but the third charged him while wielding a large screwdriver. McKee fired and hit his attacker in both legs with a load of birdshot. The three were then held at gunpoint until police arrived. (The Mirror, Altoona, PA)
