An order to keep her former boyfriend away wasn’t enough to deter him from harassing her, but a handgun was. Police say a woman in Lexington, Ky., shot a man who failed to comply with a court order to stay away from her. The man, who was shot multiple times, was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment. (WKYT, Lexington, KY, 5/10/16)

The 71-year-old proprietor of a convenience store in Buckhead, Ga., used a 9 mm Luger handgun to thwart an early morning robbery. When a 21-year-old man burst into the business and demanded the keys to the owner’s vehicle, she instead pushed the store’s panic button and got her gun. This caused the suspect to hastily leave the building and flee the scene in the car in which he had arrived, which had a flat tire. He then drove down the road until sparks from the vehicle’s rim ignited a fire which would eventually consume the entire automobile. The culprit was later apprehended by the police. November 1981
Mary Markham was willing to hand over cash to two criminals who burst into her Mount Clemens, Mich., liquor store. But when one robber put a pistol to her son’s head and his partner opened fire on her husband, she had to take action. Grabbing a pair of pistols, she loosed a fusillade of shots at the crooks, killing both. A police officer on the scene noted that one robber was hit three times and the other was struck five times, commenting, “That’s pretty good shooting from two hands—for anyone.” (The News, Detroit, MI)
