Marty Flynn and Ryan Bizzarro, both Democratic members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, were walking home in downtown Harrisburg after dinner when they were approached from behind by gun-wielding robbers. With a gun pointed at his coworker’s head, Flynn, who possessed a legally owned firearm, exchanged gunfire with the assailants before the suspects fled. After calling 9-1-1, the men arrived home safely while the two suspects were captured by police a few blocks away. Since then, four juveniles have been charged in the altercation and have also been connected with another robbery in the area the previous evening. (Erie Times News, Erie, PA, 10/16/14)

A youth pastor in Grants Pass, Ore., noticed evidence of a break-in at his church Wednesday morning and notified the sheriff’s office. After a search of the premises by the authorities turned up empty, the pastor and a friend re-entered the church to determine what items had been damaged or stolen. They eventually stumbled upon the 28-year-old burglar hiding under a pile of blankets in an upstairs closet. The intruder was held at gunpoint until the sheriff deputies could return to the scene to take him into custody. According to the youth pastor, the culprit did not resist and appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic. (Grants Pass Daily Courier, Grants Pass, OR, 3/26/15)

December 1932
A 17-year-old boy, Kenneth Anderson, routed four robbers with a shotgun near Racine, Wis., on September 9. One of the bandits was carried away by his accomplices. The men had attempted to hold up the place of business of Kenneth’s father, one of the men taking a position at the door armed with a sawed-off shotgun. Kenneth happened to be in the rear of the place when he heard the command, “Hands up,” and he immediately procured the shotgun and fired.
