There is a host of aftermarket triggers available for the AR platform, but the drop-in unit from Tactical Fire Control offers not only a crisp single-stage trigger pull but adds a “third mode” of operation. Typically, semi-automatic ARs have two positions, “safe” and “fire,” and the Tac-Con, of course, has both. The standard “fire” position delivers a conventional, consistent 4-lb., 9-oz. pull. But the 3MR, which comes with its own selector lever, adds a position 180 degrees from safe (where selective-fire would be on an M16) for its proprietary third mode. Movement of the bolt carrier against a lever on the rear of unit drives the trigger blade positively forward, providing a pull that measured 4 lbs., 7 ozs., in my DPMS AP4 with virtually no takeup and little overtravel. You can actually see and feel the trigger blade, which is raked more forward than standard AR triggers, coming forward as the bolt carrier moves when set in the third mode. The self-contained unit, made of EDM or CNC-machined steel coated in NP3 nickel Teflon, behaves like a short-reset trigger for AR-type rifles. Installation is quick and easy, and your rifle’s original trigger pins can be used. Even though it has three-positions, the unit is semi-automatic only, and is priced at $495.
