As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, communities across the nation are reflecting on the people and principles that have preserved our freedoms for generations. On Saturday, June 27, the Karnes County Friends of NRA did exactly that, welcoming hundreds of supporters to Falls City, Texas, for an unforgettable evening themed "Shot Heard 'Round the World."

Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen (center) poses with the Texas Dare Devils cannon crew who fired the opening-ceremony blast for the Karnes County Friends of NRA "Shot Heard 'Round the World" celebration.

From the opening cannon blast to the final auction item, the event celebrated not only America's founding, but the generations of Americans who continue to protect and preserve our freedoms through the shooting sports, firearm education, and unwavering support of the Second Amendment.

The evening began with a fitting tribute to our nation's heritage as Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen fired the ceremonial first cannon. Moments later, NRA Second Vice President Rocky Marshall joined the Texas Dare Devils for a live cannon reenactment that transported guests back to the birth of our nation and set the stage for a celebration worthy of America's 250th year.

The excitement carried throughout the evening as 275 supporters came together in a powerful display of generosity and patriotism. By night's end, the event had raised more than $215,000 while generating more than $620 in net revenue per attendee.

Those remarkable results build on an already impressive legacy. After finishing as the No. 1 Friends of NRA event in the nation in 2025, the Karnes County committee once again demonstrated why it is regarded as one of the premier Friends of NRA committees in the country. While the numbers are certainly impressive, the true measure of the event's success lies in the volunteers, sponsors, donors, and supporters whose dedication ensures Friends of NRA can continue funding programs that protect and preserve our nation's shooting heritage.

Guests had no shortage of remarkable auction items to compete for. The lineup featured an Empire Cannon, a custom America 250th Fort Knox Gun Safe, custom Black Rain Ordnance "Remember the Alamo" and "We the People" .300 Blackout rifles, an Ultimate Deer Camp Package complete with a Field & Stream Muddy Ox Box Blind, 80-pound deer feeder, and a pallet of corn, duck hunting and fishing adventures, and an assortment of exclusive Texas and America 250th commemorative collectibles.

Among the evening's most meaningful offerings was a handcrafted coffee table featuring a genuine leather insert made from spent cartridges fired during practices and competitions by members of Wilson County 4-H, a proud Friends of NRA grant recipient. More than a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, it represented the lasting impact Friends of NRA fundraising has across the country. Every Friends of NRA event helps provide grant funding that supports youth shooting sports, firearm safety education, marksmanship training, law enforcement, conservation, and organizations dedicated to preserving our proud shooting heritage.

One of the night's most memorable moments came during the live auction of the Charles Daly 1911 .45 ACP Veteran Recognition Firearm. After placing the winning bid, Rocky Marshall was given the honor of drawing the winning veteran's name and personally presenting the firearm. It was a fitting tribute that served as a powerful reminder that the freedoms celebrated throughout the evening have always been secured through the service and sacrifice of brave Americans.

While the auctions, raffles, and patriotic displays made for an unforgettable evening, the true heart of the event was the dedicated volunteer committee whose months of planning made it all possible. Melinda and LeRoy Pawelek, Randy Witte, Joni Huwe, David Turner, Jason and Angeline Moczygemba, Don Bullard, Josh Lansford, Garrett Dragon, Duane Korekwa, and Donald Starnes exemplified what Friends of NRA has always been about: neighbors coming together to strengthen their communities while investing in the future of our freedoms.

Reflecting on the event's success, Karnes County Friends of NRA Chairman LeRoy Pawelek shared:

"The 'Shot Heard Around the World' Karnes County event was a tremendous success and the perfect way to kick off the week leading up to our Fourth of July celebration. The firing of the cannon was the highlight of the evening, and I was told it even made the social media highlight reels in the days that followed.

The pride displayed by our local VFW Post throughout the event was truly inspiring. Equally impressive was the leadership demonstrated by our local 4-H youth, who volunteered their time and worked tirelessly to help make the evening a success. It was wonderful to see so many returning attendees whose continued support means so much to us, while also welcoming many first-time guests who left saying, 'We'll be back next year!'

The evening was the result of the countless hours of planning and hard work put forth by our entire committee.

Most importantly, it was a night to thank God, celebrate America's exceptionalism, honor the heritage and freedoms protected by the Second Amendment, and showcase the generosity of our community. I believe we accomplished every one of those goals."

Their efforts ensure that every dollar raised continues to make a difference through Friends of NRA's grant program, supporting the programs that introduce new shooters to safe firearm handling, expand marksmanship opportunities, strengthen law enforcement training, preserve our hunting heritage, and keep America's shooting traditions alive for generations to come.

As our nation reflects on 250 years of independence, the Karnes County Friends of NRA committee demonstrated that the ideals that sparked a revolution in 1776 are still alive today. Through their hard work, generosity, and dedication, they proved once again that when Americans come together in support of a cause greater than themselves, the impact reaches far beyond a single evening.

Congratulations to the entire Karnes County Friends of NRA committee, every volunteer, sponsor, donor, and attendee who helped make this remarkable celebration possible. The "Shot Heard 'Round the World" echoed across a young nation 250 years ago. Thanks to the dedication of Friends of NRA volunteers and supporters like those in Karnes County, its message of liberty continues to resonate today and will for generations to come.
