Of all the equipment issued to members of the armed services, one of the most memorable—besides a rifle—is designated “Liner, Wet Weather Poncho,” and more commonly referred to as a “woobie.”

It’s simple in design and construction—a silky synthetic exterior with a bit of insulation stitched in between—but it’s been a favorite on the front lines since the Vietnam War thanks to its ability to retain warmth and provide comfort in austere environments. Nine Line Apparel has evolved the poncho liner with its Woobie Puff Jacket, an outer garment that captures the essence and structure of the woobie—polyester layers, panel stitched with poly batting.

The company delivers it in an easy-to-wear package replete with pockets for storage, and a zippered front, raised collar and elastic hem cinch to help keep out the cold. Available in black, coyote, and olive drab. Price: $150. Contact: Nine Line Apparel; (912) 480-4250;
