Steyr is re-envisioning riflemaking with its Monobloc bolt-action. True to the name, there’s a singularity here, though few would guess that the receiver and barrel are hammer-forged as a single unit from one steel billet. Considering qualities such as concentricity and rigidity, the concept seems to be correct. Different, too, is the synthetic stock’s styling, though its flourishes are joined by practical features, like an aluminum bedding block and leather inlays on the forearm, grip and comb. You can also have it in several color schemes, ranging from black to pale gray. The Monobloc—presently limited to .308 Win. and .30-’06 Sprg.—comes with Steyr’s now-familiar tang-mounted slider, which functions as a safety, cocking piece and bolt lock. The trigger unit and four-round magazine are both detachable. It will be interesting to see how the innovative rifle fares in the American market—where pricing is expected to top $5,000—and ultimately, if there are imitators. steyrarms.com
