Since its 1950 introduction, Colt’s Commander has been a popular variation of the M1911 pistol. Designed to be small and lighter than the full-size .45, the original Commander was also intended to be used with 9 mm Luger ammunition. The rise of the concealed-carry market has brought about a bit of a renaissance for the 9 mm Commander, with new offerings from Colt, Ruger and others. With all the new options out there, shooters shouldn’t forget that quality magazines go a long way toward improving the function and reliability of semi-automatic handguns. The XP 10-round mags from Chip McCormick Custom are a great option for 9 mm 1911s.
