A Georgia man is grateful that his father kept an old hunting rifle in the home because it came in handy during a self-defense situation in January. When the man and his mother entered their Decatur, Ga., home, two criminals stormed in after them and started pistol-whipping the victims. One of the intruders pulled the man toward a bedroom where the hunting rifle was stored. Despite the fact that the victim had a gun to his head, he still grabbed the rifle and shot. He ended up shooting both intruders, one of whom died in the yard outside and the other of whom died at a medical facility. (wtvm.com, Columbus, GA, 1/19/16)

An Ohio man is in critical condition at a local hospital after a failed attempt to burglarize a Harrison Township house. The female 23-year-old resident was at home at the time of the crime with her 2-year-old son. After hearing a noise, she went to investigate and found a strange man attempting to remove the screen from a window. She first called her boyfriend, but when he didn’t arrive in time, she armed herself and fired on the intruder. Suffering a wound to the head, the burglar briefly fled down the street before collapsing to the ground. (abc22now.com, Miamisburg, OH, 1/8/16)
