A Denver-area family is grief-stricken after a neighbor’s dogs mauled one of their pets, an incident that resulted in the shooting death of one of the attacking animals. A man visiting his mother’s home heard dogs howling in the backyard. When he looked out to see what was happening, he saw his mother’s dachshund lying dead on the ground. Two of the neighbor’s dogs had broken through the fence and had started fighting with the family’s dogs. After killing the dachshund, the neighbor’s dogs attacked the family’s beagle. “That’s when I shot the one,” said the homeowner’s son. The neighbor’s other dog went into hiding, but animal control officers captured it once they responded to the scene. The beagle was treated for several bite wounds, but is expected to survive.
