In Meridian, Miss., a woman was caught off guard when a man kicked in her front door while she was upstairs. The resident saw a stranger standing in her living room, retrieved her handgun and shot the intruder three times in the chest. He ran from the house but collapsed and died outside. Meridian Police Department Detective Dareall Thompson said the resident was acting within her rights under the Mississippi Castle Doctrine. “Once they are inside, A, they are trying to do bodily harm or, B, they are trying to take property from you,” Thompson said. Local authorities are lauding the actions of a southern Washington man after he held two burglars at gunpoint until they could arrive at the scene. The homeowner pulled up to his property in a vehicle and noticed a strange truck parked in the front yard. Armed with a gun, the resident got the jump on the thieves and instructed them to get on their knees. When he discovered that his own phone was not working, the homeowner had one of the culprits call 911 on themselves. A spokesperson for the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office said the tenant’s actions demonstrate the value of law-abiding, well-trained citizens being armed. (KATU, Portland, OR, 12/5/15)

December 1982
Confined to a wheelchair, Sergy Bublikow of Rochester, N.Y., was unable to summon authorities after he’s shot and killed one of a trio of house-breakers that had invaded his home. Bublikow retaliated with shotgun blasts after one of the intruders threw a 5-lb. horseshoe at him that had struck his wheelchair. The telephone wires had been torn down, and the invalid was isolated with the body until a neighbor returned home six hours later. (The Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester, NY)
