Whether for competition or self-defense, extended magazine wells, or “mag funnels,” make magazine changes faster by providing a larger target area for inserting a loaded replacement magazine quickly into the gun. Such devices, though, can require alteration of the gun’s frame. PistolGear, a purveyor of accessories for Springfield Armory’s XD family of pistols, offers a no-gunsmithing solution for the original XD in the form of U.S.-made, anodized, machined-aluminum magazine well extensions that affix to the channel inside the gun’s grip frame between the backstrap and magazine well proper. The Patriot, designed for concealed carry, offers a 20 percent larger opening than the stock well and has a cutout at the front to allow a magazine to be pulled free of the gun. The UnLimited increases the target area by 50 percent, but requires the company’s Slam Pads to ensure magazine insertion, as it extends below stock baseplates. Price: $65, Patriot; $75, UnLimited.
