A homeowner in Macon County, Mo., shot a would-be intruder who brandished a nail gun at him before reaching into his waistband for a loaded handgun. Authorities found the suspect dead with the loaded handgun, and traces of methamphetamines on his clothing. The homeowner was not hurt. (KHMO AM 1070, Hannibal, Mo., 9/25/18)

Rob Benosky, proprietor of a fruit stand near Toledo, Ohio, frustrated a holdup on August 12 when he reached for his unloaded revolver as two men sought to rob him. The two holdup men fled to their machine and escaped. (Toledo, OH)
