The Armed Citizen

Armed Citizen® Today

A big-game hunter used his rifle to defend against a charging grizzly bear in an Idaho forest, in what was determined to be a clear act of self-defense.

On the morning of October 18, the hunter was hiking through thick timber in the North Antelope flats of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest in southeast Idaho. A grizzly bear came charging out of the brush nearby, and the hunter used his hunting rifle to shoot the bear, killing it before it made contact with him.

Immediately after the encounter, the hunter called the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, which notified the Idaho Fish and Game dept. An investigation determined that the hunter acted in self-defense, as he was "charged by a bear from a close distance." (Idaho Fish and Game; Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Idaho; 10/20/25)

From the Armed Citizen® Archives – September 1973

In the course of a liquor store stickup, a thief aimed a .32-cal. revolver at Newark, N.J., store owner Michael Lambusta's head and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired, and before the robber could fire again, Lambusta quickly seized his own pistol from a shelf and fired once, fatally wounding his assailant. (The Star-Ledger, Newark, N.J.)
