A mother and her 13-year-old son were at the corner store when two men approached them and opened fire, shooting the teen in both feet. The mother responded by pulling out her gun and returning fire. She said she recognized one of the suspects as a man who had been harassing her for years. She had been so concerned about the harassment that she got a concealed-carry license. The suspects fled, firing as they ran, but were later captured. One was being held on $250,000 bond, and police say charges are pending against the other man involved in the incident. The 13-year-old has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering. (myfox28columbus.com, Columbus, OH, 11/11/14)

When an argument in the street between mother and son became violent, a neighbor grabbed a gun and intervened, killing the assailant and saving the victim’s life. The altercation occurred late Sunday night in a residential area of Phoenix, Ariz. Following a heated discussion with his mother, the attacker produced a knife and started stabbing her. One neighbor ran to his home, retrieved his handgun and returned to the scene. After repeatedly ordering the son to stop stabbing his mother, which he ignored, the neighbor shot him. The perpetrator later died of his injuries; meanwhile the victim is expected to survive. (The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, AZ, 3/23/15)

August 1981
When he received a phone call from an elderly neighbor saying that a man was trying to break into her bedroom window, George Underwood, a retired Holly Springs, N.C. sheriff’s constable, knew what to do. Grabbing a rifle, he ran to the house and found a young man attempting to break in though a kitchen door. When the man refused to stop breaking the glass door, Underwood shot him in the leg. The would-be intruder then fled, only to be apprehended by police minutes later. (The Times, Raleigh, NC)
