St. Louis police are looking for a would-be robber who fired multiple rounds inside a neighborhood grocery store. An armed intruder, pretending to buy a 20-cent piece of candy, accosted the store owner and her husband. After the gunman grabbed her husband, the woman grabbed her gun. The robber fired multiple shots at the store owner’s husband, but no bullets struck the victim. Although she never got a clear shot, the woman’s threats to return fire eventually scared off the bad guy. (ksdk.com, St. Louis, MO, 1/18/16)

Three men attempted to rob a Philadelphia, Pa., convenience store—a decision that would get one of the actors killed, a second one arrested, and the third sought after by police. The armed store owner was able to defend himself with a firearm, shooting one of the criminals in the head. That suspect died at the scene; one of his two accomplices was arrested by authorities a short time later and the other remains on the lam. The store owner did not sustain any injuries. June 1961
In Atherton, Calif., an armed burglar broke into the bedroom of Dr. and Mrs. William W. Tevis, snatched a wallet from the night table and, disappointed at its meager contents, ordered the physician to get his trousers from the closet. Mrs. Tevis, at the burglar’s command, headed for her purse in the living room. The gun-waving burglar followed her, and Dr. Tevis, now armed with a .32 ACP pistol taken from the closet, called out. The bandit whirled and the doctor shot him three times. (San Francisco News-Call Bulletin, San Francisco, CA)
