San Antonio police said a would-be robber of a Subway restaurant was stopped by a man with a gun. Witnesses said the suspect demanded money from an employee and threatened to shoot. That’s when a man who had been waiting outside saw what was going on, entered the establishment, drew his concealed handgun and pointed it at the suspect. The miscreant then ran away without taking anything. No injuries were reported. (San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio, Texas, 11/19/14)

A 25-year-old burglar was shot while attempting to break into a Denbigh, Va. home on Wednesday night. According to the police, the suspect broke a window and entered the building while the 31-year-old resident and her toddler were at home. Upon encountering the thief, the mother shot him, ending the threat. When the burglar was finally released from the hospital 19 days later, he was arrested by the authorities. Neither the mother nor the child was injured during the incident. (The Daily Press, Newport News, VA, 3/30/15)

June 1972
After being robbed four times, shot once, and then denied a handgun permit on the grounds that his business was too small, Vidal Nunez, a New York City grocer, killed a robber with three shots from an unlicensed .25-caliber pistol. He was convicted of manslaughter. State Supreme Court Justice Joseph R. Corso gave him a suspended sentence and five years’ probation with this comment: “A life was taken. But what is a decent, law-abiding merchant to do—allow stealing or try to protect himself and his property?” (The New York Times, New York, NY)
