Armed Citizen® Today

An accused burglar is in critical condition after being shot by a homeowner on Chicago's Northwest Side, who discovered the suspect inside his residence early one Sunday morning.

Just after 1 a.m. on March 5, 2023, the homeowner was woken by the sound of his dog barking. After hearing a loud noise from the basement of the house, the resident grabbed his firearm and went to discover the origin of the noise. Minutes later, he met the 27-year-old intruder, who began walking toward him. The homeowner fired once, striking the alleged burglar in the arm.

Police arrived soon after and took the suspect to an area hospital. The man is currently facing a felony count of burglary. (CBS Chicago, Chicago, Ill., 3/5/23)

From the Armed Citizen® Archives – April 1983

Disturbed by noises in the night, a Huntsville, Ala., woman got up to find a man going through her house. At gunpoint, he demanded money and threatened to kill her, then forced her into the bedroom. He repeated the demand to her husband, Willard Shelton, who tossed some bills toward the thug. When the intruder insisted they hand him the cash, Shelton reached for a gun and fatally shot him.
