Acting on the trick in “trick or treat,” a criminal in New Haven, Conn., took the Halloween saying to a tragic extreme. Walking down the street, a local resident was approached by a stranger who said, “Happy Halloween,” before stabbing his victim. The pedestrian’s cousin was waiting in a nearby car, and witnessing the assault, stepped out of the vehicle to intervene and was stabbed as well. The cousin drew his firearm and shot the assailant in the chest, killing him. (The Hartford Courant, New Haven, Conn., 10/11/18)

Upon discovering three trespassers in her backyard, the homeowner opened fire, hitting one suspect in the leg. The other two suspects were arrested at the scene for first-degree burglary, while the wounded intruder was to be booked upon his release from the hospital.
