Seven rifle families comprise Kimber’s lineup of turn-bolt repeaters, and the one we have here falls within the Hunter category, utilizing the company’s 84M receiver, which means it is scaled efficiently for weight savings while still accommodating the .308 Win. family of cartridges. Our test sample here on the range came chambered for the flat-shooting 6.5 Creedmoor. Other chambering options include .280 Ackley Improved and the classic .308 Win.

What you get with Kimber’s Model 84M is a hand-finished, lightweight action that offers controlled-round feed, thanks to its Mauser-style claw extractor. A three-position, Model 70-style wing safety is provided, too. Kimber provides pillar-bedding support for its match-grade barreled action, which sits in a fiber-reinforced polymer gunstock featuring a Desolve Blak camouflage finish. The combination is a dependable system that its maker backs with a sub-m.o.a. accuracy guarantee.

Despite the gun’s sub-6-lb. weight, on the range with the 84M, the gun handled 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition with ease. Despite the steep shoulder, fairly straight case and long bullets of the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge, we found the action smooth and swift with flawless operation thanks to its controlled-round-feed action. The removable radial compensator, or muzzle brake, though loud, was found to soften the shoulder blow quite a lot. All told, the Kimber America 84M Hunter Pro Desolve Blak has proven to be a perfectly capable hunting rifle for North American game that won't beat you up on the shooting bench or mountain trek.
