Hunting stories are often beautifully written, but rarely offer practical advice. Meanwhile, cartridge guides are full of important information, but are about as fun to read as a printer’s instruction manual.

This book, however, is different.

Award-winning writer and Field Editor of this magazine, Richard Mann, has not herein provided us with yet another dry, technical book akin to a handloading manual. Rather, this book is filled with the stories and wisdom Mann has accrued during a lifetime of hunting and writing about the outdoors—with plenty of cartridge knowledge mixed in.

Whether hunting for Appalachian tree squirrels or Cape buffalo in the swamps of Mozambique, a hunter establishes a close relationship with his gear. In the book’s 408 pages covering 50 cartridges, Mann and other outdoor experts tell stories that explore that relationship and provide usable information to help you pick the right round for your needs.

The book is also informed by Mann’s expertise in serving as a veteran, patrol officer and special agent, plus his competition success and as an NRA-certified instructor. Perhaps most importantly to the reader, however, Mann’s long history as a writer for firearm and hunting publications and author of several books has honed his ability to convey information in an entertaining and informative fashion.
