FN America, LLC recently announced the availability of the FN 509 Midsize MRD in flat dark earth. The FN 509 is a striker-fired polymer-framed handgun that was first introduced three years ago as an open-market version of the company’s XM17 Modular Handgun Systems entry based off the older FN FNS-9.

Where the normal FN 509 is a full-size chambered in 9 mm Parabellum with a 17-round magazine, the FN 509 Midsize is a new addition to the FN 509 family in a slightly smaller package. The FN 509 midsize is very similar to the fullsize, but with a smaller frame that can be more easily concealed without losing the controllability given with the grip-size. It also has a slightly smaller magazine capacity of 15 rounds, with the option for 10-round magazines as well for compliance in certain states.

The FN 509 Midsize MRD FDE has the same controls and most of the same features, with a few additions. Like the fullsize, the midsize has ambidextrous magazine release buttons and slide catches on both sides of the frame. The safety is built into the trigger and there is a Picatinny rail segment molded into the dust-cover for attaching accessories. The backstrap can be changed out and the grip-frame itself has aggressive texturing for improved grip. Enlarged serrations are on the front and rear of the slide for improved grip when charging. The barrel is cold hammer-forged with a recessed target crown.

Other than the size, another different of the FN 509 Midsize MRD FDE versus the normal fullsize model is the slide is optic-ready, with a removable panel behind the chamber and in front of the rear sight. This accommodates several small-optic options on the market like the Trijicon RMR or SRO. The iron sights are raised to allow their use through the lower portion of a small reflex sight when mounted.

The frame and slide are both in FDE with the hues between the two being slightly different as FN is known for when it comes to the color. The FN 509 Midsize MRD FDE comes in a soft-sided case, magazines, and all the optic mounting hardware included. The retail price is $800.
